Today's Broadway week show is 'Billy Elliot.' I will admit, this isn't on my top see list, but I love a good dance-based show, and this show is all about ballet. I chose to style a look based on the ballet theme, but since the show is about a boy who is a ballet dancer, I chose to keep the color palette more in the tan/neutral zone, and have delicate accessories to keep the look feminine.

broadway week: day 3 - west side story

For day 3 of Broadway week, I strayed from Regis & Kelly's path, with a look inspired by a show I've been dying to see: West Side Story. The look comprises of a white 'Maria' dress, mixed with some harder edged 'Shark v. Jets' inspired pieces. You could easily wear this look to the big dance to meet the man of your dreams, or be a girl behaving badly around town! ;)

broadway week: day 2 - HAIR

I've swooned and gushed all about HAIR before, but since Regis and Kelly wanted to feature them [and their nearly entirely new tribe!] for Broadway week, I thought, why not? No need to tell me twice. This look is perfect for lounging in the park, roaming the city, attending a be-in [maybe of the music festival variety?] and most importantly spreading peace, love, and letting the sun shine in!

broadway week: day 1 - american idiot

It's Broadway week! [At least on my blog and Live! with Regis and Kelly :)] I'm going to be showcasing fashion inspired by a lot of the shows currently on Broadway that I am in love with or dying to see [aaaand some of the same ones R&K pick, too!] 

Today's look is inspired by the new musical 'American Idiot.' This show looks beyond amazing. The entire score for the show is comprised of songs from Green Day's album of the same name, and a few tracks from their latest release, '21st Century Breakdown.' [side note: I always forget how much I like Green Day until I hear one of their songs and then I remember.] The look of the show is kind of grungy and dirty, but theres hidden elements of polish to it all, which is the look I tried to create with these pieces. And what good punk rock show doesn't require the perfect, smudgy, waterproof eyeliner?

six, seven, eight, NINE

A new musical movie comes out Christmas Day, and I'm quite intrigued by it. 'NINE'* is a musical I know very little about, other than it was on Broadway, the revival starred Antonio Banderas, and now they have turned it into a star-studded film. According to BroadwayWorld.com, NINE " revolves around one central character, Guido Contini a film director in the Fellini mold. He is contracted to write and direct a film, but is unable to come up with a suitable plot. After recent box office failures, he finds himself drifting towards a nervous breakdown. Guido finds himself examining his past flawed relationships with the many women who have come through his life and the struggle to act his mature age of 40--as opposed to nine. " Starring Daniel-Day Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Kate Hudson, Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson, Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Sophia Loren, and Dame Judi Dench, this film sounds like it could have extreme potential. I am going to have to do my homework before I fork out $8.00 to see it though...

Anna Sui is the next designer on deck for Target's lower price point collections, but this time there's a twist. As I understand it, starting with Sui's collection, each designer will have to pick a specific client in mind for their looks. Anna chose a subject--or rather, group of subjects--close to my heart: the Gossip Girl ladies. She came up with 4-5 looks for each of the four leading characters: Blair, Serena, Jenny, and Vanessa. While I liked the designs for "Vanessa," I felt they 1) didn't gel with the rest of the collection very well at all [they were all brown and orange!] and 2) didn't really embody Vanessa's Brooklyn/hipster vibe. I like a lot of the "Serena" looks, but again, not so 'Serena.' I think the "Jenny" looks definitely have the right vibe, they aren't my favorite things. I think the "Blair" collection is the most true to the character, but again, [in my opinion!] there are some things that I just don't see Blair wearing [although this dress to the left, so fab!] I'm hoping they're more impressive in person. The collections did get me excited, because for once I feel ahead of the game. For my Independent Study this past semester, I designed 3 collections using watercolors, and each one was very loosely based on a Gossip Girl character, combined with a touch of my 3 favorite musicals, and a bit of a location. Blair had elements of 1890's 'Spring Awakening'-esque feminine touches, and hints of Moscow. Serena encompassed the free spirit vibe of 'HAIR', and dashes of London. Jenny went a bit more alternative combining 'RENT' with a grungy bit of Seattle. The Blair and Serena collections were my favorite, but the Jenny collection I really let myself experiment with color combos and design elements. I've posted Anna's interpretation of the characters, along with mine...

While you really should be at the s.a.d.a. Fashion Show on Saturday night[8pm, Lansing Center, $12!] , there is still a way to have a stylish evening if you can't make it to the event. "Grey Gardens" is premiering on HBO that night. The movie, starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange, is based on a documentary from 1975 about Edith "Big Edie" Beale, and her daughter Edith "Little Edie" Beale, who were the aunt and first cousin of Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. The documentary focused on the point in their lives when they lived in squalor and isolation at their East Hampton mansion, but the HBO movie shows more of their lives, and how their lifestyle came to be. It also spawned a Tony nominated musical of the same name, but that production has since closed. I would really like to see this documentary, next time I'm home, I'll have to see if the video store has it to rent, otherwise I may have to join Netflix. "Grey Gardens" premieres on HBO, Saturday April 18th, 8pm.

i got million dollar charm, cousin...

Spring has finally arrived in East Lansing, despite the snow that fell on Sunday. And because of that, I decided to post these shots of the Broadway Revival Cast of 'HAIR' featuring some fabulous spring fashions. These images feature the eight principles of the show, most of which who made the transfer over from the summer production in Central Park, in some really cute Spring looks, that I feel are actually really achievable on a student's budget. I mean, Kacie Sheik's amazing Rebecca Taylor booties are a little bit out of my price range, but I've seen similar styles at DSW and Urban Outfitters. I also love Sasha Allen's Marc by Marc Jacobs dress, the colors and prints are adorable. The boys don't look too bad either, combining military and hippie chic's for a really laid-back, yet really cool vibe. And how adorable is Gavin Creel? This University of Michigan Alumnus has loads of talent and yes, million dollar charm...even if he is a Wolverine. :) 

Also, 'HAIR' has its official opening tonight on Broadway, so I'm sending good thoughts, and hoping they break many, many legs tonight!!! LOVE.
