we're off to see the wizard

For the second installment of my movie/fashion series, I chose the iconic and timeless 'Wizard of Oz.' This is one of my favorite movies ever, the colors, the music, the story, Toto...and I love Judy Garland. I love that this story has been interpreted, and reinterpreted over and over again. It spawned the Broadway musical 'Wicked,' the mini-series 'Tin Man,' starring the fabulous Zoey Deschanel, among other things. This is one of the movies I wanted more than anything for the fashion show, but, movies were assigned by luck of the draw, and it didn't go in my favor for this one...{but I do love my movie} This is a spread from Vogue, shot by Annie Leibowitz, and featuring a plethora of designers re-imagining Dorothy's classic dress. I also created an inspiration board on Polyvore, and tried to make a mix of high and low end pieces to put a spin on the costumes...and included a pop culture reference or two {Elton's Greatest Hits anyone??}

This months issue of 'Interview' Magazine features some really amazing black and white photography. Here's a couple galleries, one of the Brooklyn based band, 'Amazing Baby,' and the other of Zac Efron, looking mighty grown-up. Swoon.

lonely boy...

I've swooned over the 'gossip girl' boys many times, and the more popular they get, the more solo features they get. Ed Westwick had his. Penn Badgley had this one in GQ magazine, and I'm sure Chace has had a couple, I just haven't found them yet. This spread from GQ was highlighting some of Spring '09 trends. Cardigans, motorcycle jackets, graphic polos, and tailored khakis are just a few of the items on GQ's hot-list, and I have to agree. On GQ's website, they also include their favorite runway interpretations of the trend, and a more affordable version, too. I love the photography style in these pics, very Marc Jacobs-esque. Boys in East Lansing need to start dressing more like this, I think...

o.k. by me in america...

This is the first post in what I hope to be a long-running series on my blog, of movies that have, or could very easily inspire fashion. This is also my way of tying in the s.a.d.a. fashion show at MSU to my blog :). The fashion show this year is titled 'lights. camera. fashion.' and each designer had a movie drawn from a hat for them, and had to create a collection inspired by it. 'West Side Story' is one of the 35+ movies being designed this year, and Vanity Fair did an amazing web exclusive spread of young hollywood stars to recreate classic scenes. Camilla Belle looked beautiful as 'Maria' and Chris Evans makes a fantastic 'Riff.' VF's website has the full list of starlets, if you're curious for more. I love how true to the film these are, yet the stylist did a greate job of keeping them fun, and somehow still modern. 'West Side' also is experiencing a revival on Broadway currently, and I've included some stills from the show. And, because I'm still pretty obsessed with polyvore.com, I threw in a set inspired by the film! Enjoy!

new legends of comedy

This months Vanity Fair features their picks for up & coming comedians, and as the cover story, what better group of people to feature than the Judd Apatow gang, left, and they chose to recreate a Tom Ford photo for their image. I think this picture is hilarious. I have a not-so-secret crush on Jason Segel and Paul Rudd, and tend to love anything they're in/part of. Side note: SO excited for their new movie, I Love You, Man, coming out on March 20th! This spread features some really amazing photos of comedians paying homage to classic comedians, and other figures in pop culture. I only wish they had included something on Andy Samberg/The Lonely Island. That album is one of the funniest things I have ever heard! Enjoy these pictures, hopefully they'll hold you over until the magazine hits the shelves!!

spring{awakening}

I have professed my love for the musical "Spring Awakening" many, many times. I had the opportunity to see it twice on Broadway before it closed {with the original cast!}, I attended an "iTunes: Live from SoHo" performance/taping, and this past Wednesday, it was playing in E. Lansing as part of the series of Broadway shows they bring to campus. If you haven't heard of "Spring Awakening," its a fantastic story about teens in 1890s Germany who's parents don't tell them about puberty, and the consequenses, all set to a rock soundtrack written by Duncan Sheik & Stephen Sater. It won 8 Tony Awards in 2007, including Best Musical, and closed February 18, 2009. If anyone has the chance to see this show on the tour, which is continuing for the better part of the next year, don't' hesitate!! This was the first time I've ever sat front row for it, so needless to say it was amaaazing. I went in skeptical, as the original cast set the bar pretty high, but the touring cast was just as fabulous. We even had the understudy for 'Melchior' perform that night, and he blew me away. I'm pretty loyal to the original 'Melchior', but this kid will do big things. Perry Sherman, watch for him. This is one of my favorite musicals, and I've had the opportunity to meet some of the cast members after the shows and events, and I swear, they only cast the most genuinely nice people in this show. Even when they clearly had people waiting for them, they stayed much longer than they could have to make sure everyone got photos and autographs. Like I said, Jonathan Groff {the original 'Melchior'}, is one of the loves of my life. It's our destiny to become best friends. :) He's amazing. The costumes and stage set are also incredible. For being a show set in 1890s Germany, its a very modern-esque stage, with seating for the cast and audience members, and the costumes have a traditional base that keeps a time/place perspective. After seeing the show last week, I was inspired to find some things on Polyvore that could totally work today for a spring look.
